of the fires this past summer are being recognized by our city on November 19th. These children are awesome. I'm not sure of the exact time, and I'll be sure to list it.

It pleases me that Pomona is doing this.
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; It's been a very hectic past 2 weeks for me with the fam...but progress is being made. If anyone has noticed...there is much less house standing out front. Looks spooky! But all the burned wood has been removed. We have saved much of the baseboards and the plate railings, trim and doors (alas, none of the French doors made it). The Goddess of Garey will be tackling all of the refinishing...must not let all that talent go to waste. And besides, Olympia is a great morale booster with always good thoughts to share.

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; There was NO, NO parking. Not only that...there were no flags at the end of the street indicating that there was a polling place near by. The only indication that there might be a polling place around were all the signs for Rothman and Perlman lining both sides of the street. I am very happy that our council voted in it's favor and this is the first chance I've had to add my 2 cents. What I'm not fully understanding is why so many have made this an issue other than what it is. Plain and simple...it's a safety issue. Legislated laws that are in place to protect me and mine. You and yours.
I am 1/2 Latina. My first language was not English. But because I was educated by my immigrant grandparents that I must obey laws, I today have a valid driver's license, my car is insured and registered. My passengers are buckled up and if they are littles, they are in the car seat. I also understand that if I drink and drive...I just might be breaking the law. So guess what? I don't drink and drive. How do I know all of this?? Because I'm just a raving beauty? Awww...that would be a no. I do believe that I know all of this, because I was educated to these very important facts. At a very early age education has been an important part of life for me.
These rules that we live by are necessary for our survival. They are in place for all who want to take advantage of this wonderful society we call America. It matters not what color our skin, our choice of religion, or language that we speak. What does matter to me is that we have a system in place to protect me and my family. A system in place that is there to protect you and yours.
We will achieve nothing by waving warning placards or making videos. If any group feels so strong that checkpoints are there only to discriminate against certain ethnic populations, perhaps all that strong energy could be channeled in a more positive way. Educate, reach out and educate. The more you educate about our legislated laws, the less in jeopardy they will place themselves.
Get one of the churches to have a table or booth at the checkpoints for those that find themselves without transportation home and provide that transportation for them.
When I clean up my property the morning after one of these checkpoints and I see the beer bottles that have been flung up against my fence, and find drugs in my bushes...I do get really mad. But I also find comfort in knowing that just maybe that person or persons did not continue on their way that night and harm someone or someones child.

ciao

More School Board Stuff

Gosh...there are some pretty good blog comments out there! I love it! I did not get to attend the meeting Thursday night, but did get to the one on Wednesday at the Antioch Baptist Church. I see that there will be one at the Diamond Bar Center this coming week. I'm not sure about the time or the day.
Wednesday was a little enlightening for me. I really liked what Adrienne Konigar-Macklin had to say. She seemed to be right on her game as well as Hank Mollet. I like Hank. I introduced myself after the meeing and had a chance to chat with him in the parking lot for a while.
Absent from the meeting was Robert Torres and also Jason Rothman. I would have liked to hear what they had to say. I would also like to know since they are Pomona kids, what schools they attended.
One of the questions asked that evening of the candidates is the issue of the achievement gap within our district. Y'all know how I feel about this issue. I am so totally not impressed with a candidate that states that parents should be given more opportunity to send their children to other schools. Let's not take care of the problem...let's just do more busing. Wake up Wong.
Ms. Konigar-Macklin introduced me to Maria Garcia who is a liason between the district and parent leads who pass on important information to other parents at their school. Ms. Garcia attached a schedule for H1N1 free vaccinations that are being given at the Bunny Clinc. The clinic is located at 200 E. 7th Street in Pomona. Vaccines will be provided during the regular clinic hours of Tuesdays 1:30-6:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 1:30-3:30 p.m. I do hope we can get this information out to as many as need be.

ciao

Pomona Schools

Meg...you lit a fire under me. I read the article on the candidates and the forum that was held last Thursday. What am I missing here? The disparity within our schools in this school district as to the state rankings is embarrassing! Can anyone tell me what can be done about this? Why do I have to drive to Diamond Bar everyday in order for my children to have the benefit of a school that ranks 10 as opposed to attending the one that they should be going to that has a rank of 1? I'm referring to API scoring and school ranks for the state of California.
Throwing the responsiblility back into the laps of parents as to motivating their children when upwards to 50% of them haven't even finished high school themselves is insane. Pomona school rankings & API Scores The education ship in our district is sinking folks. How can we help these kids when the teachers and parents need so much help themselves.
I suck at math and I have a college degree. So how do I help with Algebra?? The last time I studied for Algebra and Geometry was to cram for the CBEST and I prayed through the whole thing. Our kids are getting Algebra in 7th grade now. Lucky for Lizzie that she was able to get tutoring every morning last year from her Algebra teacher. But, she had to get up extra early for the whole year and get to school an hour early every day. God Bless Mr. Tim over at Lorbeer. Last week she got her progress report and there was an A+ in Algebra.
Credit recovery programs are helpful, but this is after the fact. If we can't take care of these kids on the elementary/middle school levels, they are certain to be candidates for a credit recovery program once they start to fail on the high school level because we have let them down.
What I want to hear is how we can get Lincoln, Lopez, Kingsley, Madison, etc. which all have ranks of 1, 2 or 3 up to the rank of Decker (rank 8) and Ranch Hills Elementary with a rank of 10. How do schools here in MY neighborhood such as Palomares Middle school (rank 1) get to the level of Lorbeer Middle school with a rank of 10. How do we get Garey HS (rank 3), Ganesha (rank 2) with Diamond Ranch which has a rank of 9 and is also listed along with Village Academy as one of the top 500 high schools in the United States. What can we do for the parents of these kids that have to struggle in this depressed economy, so that they can motivate their children? What do we do for the kids that want to attend these higher ranking schools but can't get lucky enough in the lottery? And why do we have to even think about busing them when we should able to offer them the same opportunity here in our neighborhood. Do we just keep handing out bandaids when they start dropping out??
I know the state is out of money and that our schools have been stripped naked. It was very painful to watch really great teachers having to fear for their jobs earlier this year. I wish I had a wand to wave over the whole place...because I really feel deeply about our children and that they should each and every one of them be entitled to a very rich education. My hat is off to all our teachers that have had their hands tied by this sorry state of affairs we are living with in California.
So candidates....let's put some meat into this. Dazzle me. The Diva needs to be dazzled.

Top Notch Job Heritage!

A great event this past Sunday and everyone needs to take a bow! Although I didn't get to take the tour I was very impressed with the event at the Ebell Club. What a grand building and well turned. Nice to see so many familiar faces and thanks for the well wishes. I even managed to spy the Pomona Goddess....thought you got by me eh?
The event was not without note. One of the vendors had some valuable jewelry stolen. My concern being that the same person that helped themselves was also going to tour the houses. Let's hope all went well. What a sleazy thing to do.
There's a big smile on my face as the construction of my little shed nears completion. A place where I can actually once again have a space of my own to work. Being a true Yankee, I bartered the Pomona Queen necklace that I had made for Sunday to Dawn, who in turn is going to fill my window boxes full of herbs and wonderful stuff. Color me sooooo happy.
I didn't have a chance to blog after that rain last week, but meant too (the road to hell being paved with.....) I opened the trailer door to find that I now had beach front property!! Visions of cabanas with women reclining in chaise lounges wearing big floppy hats and sipping drinks with tiny umbrellas danced in my head. I considered it do-able until the next day when the whole damn thing dried up. Pomona Beach was such a loverly little dream. I think that when the dozers arrive, they had better not leave me alone with one....Pomona Beach....hmmmmmmm.
If y'all happen to be driving through Diamond Bar and are at the corner of Golden Springs and Diamond Bar Blvd...and if you happen to glance up at the Lorbeer bulletin board...yes that is my Elizabeth who made student of the week again. That girl does make me proud considering that all she was able to salvage from the fire was her Bible, her green violin, her journal and her teddy bear. Awwwww sweet youth.

caio

Is is really October?????

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I've been up to my knickers in life straightening projects of late. Getting back in the grove just isn't the same as when I was a lot younger. Life in the fire zone is slowly progressing forward. It's nice to see The Garden shaping up and looking loverly again.
Today is the Herb Fest and although there is much work to do here, I'll be popping through the fence.
As for the projects here...that grand old cottage is finally gone. In it's place will be an equally charming cottage, but without the wonderfulness that the 1887 cottage had. I'm trying to be very positive here! There's just only so much one can do when you can't replace that which was irreplaceable
Any day now one should be able to see some positive flow around here. Perhaps even the sound of a hammer or too. All in good time. There are just so many hoops to jump through...and someone keeps holding them higher. Lend me a ladder for the next one...lost mine in the fire.

In a more pleasant note..my knitting class decided that our project this semester is to make small caps for "newborns" and the donation will be to Pomona Valley Hospital. Did someone tell me that there used to be fountains in the middle? Then something about the homeless bathing in them which caused the city to turned them into planters...think the bathers might have been more interesting. I get all sad when I see the tiles with the Pomona logo that are broken and that haven't been replaced...sad.

So I think it would be very cool to put the logo on "Grace"....such an amazing car. Problem is, just don't know where I would be able to fit it in. And then, white would not show that well...I'll have to check to see if they can print one up in black.
Something exciting to add...the knitting group is starting up again! We will have a Sunday late afternoon barbeque and then a knit along here at "Camp Pomona" at the rear of 823 N. Garey. Anyone wanting to join in, just bring along some yarn and needles...or your latest project. This is the first time the group has been together since the fire. Pictures?? Our backyard??

As it turned out, 2 aspiring photographers visiting Pomona to take pictures with vintage settings, happened upon our spot. (not really a house, but more a spot). They had with them a very attractive young lady and had asked to take pictures for their portfolios using this mess as a background. Who am I to stand in the way of dreams.

They were so excited about the whole thing! The name escapes me. But I think that's what I've morphed into.

Mr. Wonderful had to take my car to the car doctor as the computer finally quit...too much smoke inhalation I suspect. (I'm sure you have seen me tooling around town in "Grace". The SUV with all the writing on it. ) At the same time he had the "Dali" taillight fixed and new wipers put on. Sometime during the 3 days that it took...someone ripped off my GPS...the nerve!! And of course, no one knows anything about it. So now if you see me driving aimlessly around town, just stop and point me in the right direction. I'm really harmless. WAAAAAAAAA!!

I've survived the Mitzie thing, and she is doing well. Barking once again...which is nice to hear. So Saturday I delved into making my "Pommes de Pomona Diva" out in the backyard inferno, trying to beat the raising heat level. Goddess of Garey had to sadly withdraw as she had duty at the Garden. I poured the potato dish into one of those aluminium pans and ran downtown to support the event being held at Tibi's. Feeling quite the accomplished person, I pulled up out front, opened the back hatch, and proceed to dump almost the whole pan onto 3rd street. WAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Managed to salvage about 1/4 which was still in the pan. It was nice to see that at least 6 others had brought in their dishes. A really unique presentation from the Pomona Bakery....Potato Lollipops.... you had to be there.

When the Goddess of Garey came to visit in the afternoon she brought the offering of a ticket to the Opera!!!! I was so elated! Of course I will go with you. So very excited. Until midnight, while the flu fairy came to visit me. Nasty. But Olympia did come by today and said that it was great. Bravo Fox!! I envy all that were able to attend. WAAAAAAAAAAA!

Thank Goodness that week is over!

caio

Potato? Read on Ren's blog that the historical event will be tomorrow at the dba. Since my culinary abilities are being challenged these days...limited to a grill in the burnt out backyard....I think I'll attempt a dish and trot on down tomorrow. This should be interesting. I adore potato dishes...tons of carbs and the thoughts thereof just get me all kinda lightheaded. I've thrown down the gauntlet, and the Goddess of Garey has picked up my challenge. This should prove to be very interesting. We thank Dr. Choi the dentist across the street for taking her to his vet in Glendora. He found her wrapped in a black plastic trash bag in his parking lot. She was all bloody and at first he thought she had been shot. Dr. Parks of West Foothill Animal Hospital said she had vicious dog bites that tore a huge hole in her side. She is lapping up the huge amount of attention that she's getting. Many stitches and a drain tube that will be removed this Saturday. Thank you all for the concern. Her dog tag was still on her and that's how we were able to get her back. Whoever did have her at least brought her back to her neighborhood.

Had an accident in front of the house this morning. No one was hurt in the 3 car accident but plenty shook up. After 10 minutes of waiting for the 911 response, I finally called the dispatch desk. Minutes later 2 officers glidded up on their shiny bikes...gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling all over. There has to be something wrong with my area and emergency response time. YA THINK?? Fred was last seen walking towards his empty lot, shaking his head and muttering "it must be in our water".

Speaking of the Van Allen's and The Garden. There seemed to be a fair amount of activity there this past Saturday for the Tomato Tasting. I went over and did some tasting...my fav was the Amana Orange tomato....yummy, yummy. I don't know if it came from Amy's Garden, so I'll find out tomorrow night at the Organic Marketplace in Claremont...at the Packing House. Hint..hint. Sorry John, no beer tasting for moi. So in my place, I'll be sending the Goddess of Garey Ave., Olympia. Please be mindful of her presence.

Starting back teaching on Thursday. Eleutherius Winance, O.S.B. I have had the honor of knowing this most wonderful man during the many years that I have been associated with St. Andrew's Abbey in Valyermo. On July 4th, Larry and I spent the day with friends installing a huge Freezer body for the monks and I sadly missed Father and wishing him a happy 100 year birthday. As was his usual Saturday schedule, he was off to the Challenger Youth Detention Center in Lancaster to say Mass. We had planned a trip up the next Sunday 7/12 but we were sidetracked by the fire on 7/ll. He was a brilliant man who had taught up until 2001 at Claremont Graduate School. Can you imagine teaching at 92??? I and all those who met and knew him will miss him greatly.

While attending the services, Larry had been trying to call me to let me know that our dog had been found. She was found in Glendora. A man called Larry (her tags were still on) and said that he saw someone throw her out of a car. He took the dog to a Vet nearby. She was in very bad shape. She had a large cut on her stomach and was pretty badly beaten up and in shock. The vet said that he thought he could save her and of course Larry told him to do what he could to save her. We will going up to bring her home today. Now this is where I cannot put into words the type of a creature that would treat a poor helpless animal like she was treated. I have great faith that one of these days someone is going to let me know who did this...and on that day I will pounce like a python on them. People like that are so stupid that they have to brag about things like this, and I have a deep deep feeling that this person lives locally. I will find you...maybe not today...but I will find you and when I do I will be happy to play fetch with you...my way. I am off to get my dog.

I almost forgot to add that today is TOMATO DAY at The Garden. The Goddess Olympia should be there. If you don't know Olympia, please make it a point to meet her. An outstanding person and also one of the knitters. A dedicated Vegan who respects the fact that I am a carnivore and manages now to only roll her eyes half of the time. I miss my days of leaning out the cottage window and chatting it up while she was watering away in the garden. Those days shall return darling, trust me.

Off to bring Mitzie home...caio

Lemons into Lemonade!

I know I have been away for a spell...chasing around things that have to be done when attempting to rebuild. It's a nasty job.

I want to share a most wonderful thing that has recently happened and maybe some read about it last weeks in DB. 20 wonderful children in La Verne, ages 3 to 15, organized and held a "Lemonade" stand last Saturday. They did this to raise funds for the 2 families that lost their homes in the fire on 7/ll.

Now kids today just don't get enough applause or recognition when they do something so wonderful. These super children raised over $1,000...can you imagine that? I have tears in my eyes again when I think of this awesome feat.

I have called both City Council offices in La Verne and also Pomona in hopes that someone will pick up the ball and perhaps recognize them for their superior act of kindness.

On a more somber note...our black Scottie is missing. And someone here has her. They called Larry, phone number was on her tag, asking for a reward...but before we could make arrangements to pick her up they hung up. It was a blocked number and therefore a deadend. I am devastated that someone would be so cruel and not return her. So...it is a breed of dog not often seen in these parts..so please keep eyes out for her..we miss her and need her back. This happened on 8/18 and we have never had a call back. She can't be far, as she had been in the yard 15 minutes earlier.

Where There's Smoke....

We are all gradually climbing out of the ashes over here on Garey. Things are actually starting to sprout again...which is entirely amazing. We are all sad about the loss of so many of the beautiful trees on both properties, but there will be new ones.
I knew that we were finally on the road to comeback when Larry jumped on one of the only things left, his riding mower and I saw him head off to tackle the front lawn. It really did my heart good.
Looks like tomorrow is move back to Garey Ave. day. Our gracious friends Patti and Robert Hayes have lent us "Ms. Opal"...a most divine 5th wheel trailer to live in during the rebuild. It looks like a long term "camp out" for moi.
Hopefully we can get a temporary fence up this weekend and I can get the dogs back home. I haven't had a chance to stop by and thank Johanna for coming to my rescue the night of the fire and keeping the girls for a few days. That was such a grand jesture. I cannot thank you enough. Just one of the many wonderful people that came to our rescue.

ciao

Things I found in the fire...

Recently there was a movie and I think the title was "Things I lost in the Fire" or something to that effect. But the most precious thing that I found in the fire is the heart and soul and love and unity of this wonderful city call Pomona.
You are all so precious to us and we thank you from the deepest part of our hearts. It's a hell of a town.

3 dump truck loads from the house alone. I think we were able to salvage 5 or 6 pieces of furniture. I have advanced to the "numb" state as I walk through the empty house hopeful that the wood will dry nicely and and not swell further. We are amazed that so many pictures and bibles were saved...things that dated pre civil war. Larry is a descendant of Patrick Henry. I have the certificate from 1998 when the house was on the Heritage tour...a little wet around the edges.
During the years many alterations were done to the interior of the house and it's wonderful to see the pillars that were covered up when the sleep porch was enclosed. So through all of this there are bright moments.
Today the trees that were destroyed are coming down. The rest we are hopeful will survive.
Thank you Meg for mentioning the bureaus/dressers. We have piles of donated clothing and no where to put it. I am going to try to sort through some of it today.
When I look at the backyard, which will be totally baren when all the clean up is done, I would like to make the land available for a community garden. I would like that very much.

Pam

Fire Update

What does one say? Dawn, Fred, Larry and I are truly overwhelmed by the outpouring from this wonderful community that we live it. It will take volumes to thank each and everyone. We grieve, but so do you. Members of the Evans family have paid a visit. The Evans family purchased the house in 1908 and the grandson and great grandson came to the house. They had lived in the house on Pearl and the Grandmother had lived in our house. We carefully ventured into the entry way the wallcovering had pealed away to reveal his grandmother's original wallpaper. It was a very sad moment for them. That was the moment that I realized that we had only been caretakers of this beautiful home and that there had been so many others before us with wonderful memories.
The morning is the hardest when I wake up and realize that I cannot make a cup of coffee and sit at my computer overlooking the garden. There is no where I would rather be than Pomona.
The help is needed most at Dawn's right now with the plants. Saturday is our clean up day. We thank so much those that have brought clothes and food. We are telling everyone who wants to help to go to the Dawn's house next door in the back yard. Food and water to help the volunteers is very welcome. We love you all and ask to keep us all in your prayers.

Fire Update

After speaking with the insurance company we find that we were probably under insured. We will see how far it goes once the adjusters finally appear.

We feel that the downstairs can be saved and the upstairs rebuilt. The cottage is a complete loss and everything behind it.

The lawn in our yarn was mowed that morning by Larry, but the vacant lot behind Dawn's and our house was at least 2 to 3 feet high with dried grass. It is a sad note.

Pam Henry

Pomona my sweet Pomona

To all, and I will try to pull back the tears, thank you so much form the bottom of our hearts. Dan McIntyre is the most incredible person on this planet. I can never, ever repay Dan and Joan for being the friends that they are, coming to our aid. We are all saddened over our losses, but it will take more than a friggin fire to drive Dawn and I out of Pomona.
Yes, we are very upset with the fire department. THOSE HOUSES COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED. Therein lies the tragedy. The deep grief in my heart is having to bury my pets that could have been saved. The children are fine, we are fine. Dawn and Fred are terrific. Those that brought food and clothes and shared in our tears are priceless friends and neighbors. And we all thank you.
We lost the cottage that our yarn shop was in that was built in 1887 and the roof and top floor of the main house is gone. We will know tomorrow whether or not we will be able to rebuild. Sadly Dawn's house has been red tagged. My heart is so sad for her and Fred. I have no idea what the Lord has in store for us, but my deep faith in Him is strong. We live in Pomona...and we have a hell of a town!!
Thank you all again for your prayers.

Awww Sweet Mystery of Life

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 311px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dzkP_UF3Fqg/SWekHbzWnfI/AAAAAAAAAC0/YEwuEDJ1vg8/s400/292661657_3987acead1_o.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289376734999125490" />

O.K. So I've been lazy and haven't written a thought lately. As my dear French Grandmere used to say, "If you haven't got anything good to say, then shut up". It always sounded better in French.

So here we are at last, 2009. What do we do with it? Gas prices are starting to climb again, 1/2 million jobs were lost in December, and I listened this morning with great anticipation to our very refined new President Elect. Is he or isn't he? Will he or won't he? Does he or doesn't he? Can he or can't he? My head hurts. But truly, it's so refreshing to listen to someone intelligent speak. (Is potato still spelled with an "e"?) I'm still trying to get over Bush with the "deer in the headlights" look on 9/11. Still, I'm just so damn hopeful, and I find this very scary at my age.

So with the kiddies back at school - oh, before I forget - High Five to our 2 Pomona High Schools as being among the top 500 High Schools in America. BRAVO!! That would be Valley View and Diamond Ranch. Makes your heart proud. The Daily Bulletin had a little mention last December. I would have headlined it, but then, that's me.

Almost forgot - so with the kiddies back in school I decided to treat myself to a quiet breakfast alone with my new iphone. I remembered seeing a little restaurant (looking very out of place) tucked into an industrial park on Holt. Although it was only a brief glance, I mentally noted it at the time. So little restaurant looking out of place, let's see what's up. Sweet surprise. Love, love, sweet surprises. New (last May) small and very friendly. Although advertised as a Walnut address, it's actually a Pomona business. This is the kind of place I would love to have down here much more locally situated. The kind of place I always envisioned on 2ND St. The menu is not big, but simple and direct. I had the Bacon, Spinach, Cheddar Omelet with Hash Browns. Great and wonderful - the coffee bar is the treat. One of the owners, Obie (charming, charming) brewed for me a carafe of Nicaraguan coffee. They carry blends from all of the world. I know it hurt when I added cream and sweetener, but that's the Diva for ya. This was more than I could eat - 1/2 would have served me well.

If you are looking for Chicken Fried Steak and Biscuits and Gravy - this ain't the place honey. They cater mostly to the Cal Poly Students and the businesses around, but I loved the atmosphere and the friendliness - that counts very high for me. So Obie and all - good luck, and I will see you again soon. The Sugar Rush Cafe rates 5 stars and you can visit their website at www.cafesugarrush.com

I have to make mention that I highly agree with the Goddess on the Pomona Post Office. What a joke. Now don't get me wrong, I love my postman. He's just great and friendly, but that post office staff over on Monterey needs a huge attitude adjustment. I doubt I have ever encountered a bigger bunch of miserable looking employees. (Oh great, they will stop my mail delivery now). The lines are longer than at the DMV and there is usually only 1 or 2 windows open at the busiest time of the day. And then someone who had toooooo much time on their hand, decided to move the drop off mail box off Monterey into the parking lot. An accident waiting to happen.

I ran in a couple of weeks ago (line was out into the lobby) and quickly discovered that the stamp machine that dispenses singles was out of order. Just then a man came out wheeling a cart with stamps and started to fill the other machine that only dispenses "sets". Since I only needed 1 lousy, miserable, single stamp - I asked if I could buy just one from him. I guess that was a "pay grade higher" because he pointed to the line that was now out the door, and said he just couldn't do that. Screw your long line. I drove down to the Fedex station near Starbucks and they were more than happy to sell me one stamp and to mail the letter for me. Yes, the Diva can get very irritated.

Anyone going to the grand opening of the Saturday night Farmers Market?? This just might be interesting.

Until next time,

ciao

Tis The Season!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 306px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dzkP_UF3Fqg/SUK-YSmkvzI/AAAAAAAAACs/cLu7QBVmivo/s400/Life1926-12-23.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5278991037751410482" />

Well, after all of this "around town sadness" since our elections, I really needed last night. The whole family trekked up the hill to the Christmas recital at Diamond Ranch High School and I left in AWE!

The evening event was so stunning. I don't know about anyone else, but in times like these, I look to our children and hope springs eternal. I have until last night felt not in the Christmas spirit. The Music Director at Diamond Ranch has done and outstanding job and the students are so talented. Our middle schooler did a fine job and I suppose she needs a new violin after last night. She felt inadequate after hearing the strings section from the high schoolers, but I reminded her that they didn't get that way without practice. AND, they had the same music teacher that she has now when they were in middle school. Bravo to all last night. Ya made me proud.

Feeling so much more "Christmassy", I glanced out at the streetlight at the end of the driveway and couldn't help but feel sadness knowing that a pig banner will fly in September, but no Holiday banner flying in December. I think that I will protest the pig banner in 2009. If ya can't give me an American flag banner for the 4th, and something in keeping with the Holidays in December - then no pig banner in Sept.

OK...I opened my mouth and Pomona Cultural Arts Commissioner Moore marched over with a big jar. She wants me to fill it up! The 2009 High Schools of Pomona Mural Competition is in needs of fundage. So here goes....it's our kids. We need to encourage them as much as we can, and if that's through even the smallest of donations, let's give. We need to show them how much we appreciate them and their talents. If you want to donate, I will have to call and find out where best to send it - unless someone knows and can post it. Although, I will be collecting at the yarn shop and will make sure it gets to Cindy. You might even spot me around town with the jar.

Looking forward to all the events that are being held this Second Saturday. Especially the ceramic bowls filled with Chili that are being offered for sale at AMOCA. The cost is $12/bowl and will be from noon until 8pm. Can you think of anything better with this crisp weather?

Until next time,

ciao

Pomona Chill

There's a chill in the air and I'm loving it. Having transplanted from Maine, I adore this weather.

I've been away from the blog for a couple of weeks, but am now back in rare form. I do want to mention a 'high five" to our own Uber Garden Maven and her nice article a week ago. Fine job Dawn. A very nice positive for our Pomona. Keep up the great work.

I am very disturbed about the news this week of the firing of Capt. Romero. I am left speechless! Is Pomona going Feudal??? Please let me know someone as I can dig out my old Renaissance dresses and get ready for the josting contests at the Chamber meetings. This is insane. I dug out my little crystal ball to see what the future holds for my dear Pomona, alas - the view is murky. Perhaps some fine wine will help clear up my vision. As I said in a prior post - just waiting for the other shoe to fall.

I do have to take the time to answer Ed's inquiry as to the schooling situation. It's call NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND or NCLB as the teachers refer to it. After raising 5 of my own, I discovered God has a sense of humor. Instead of basking in the glory of old age, I am raising 2 grandchildren. And believe me...I'm keeping up with young mommas.

I discovered to my dismay that here in north Pomona, our elementary schools only go to grade 5. Middle schools are grades 6, 7 and 8. I really felt that I wanted the oldest to continue in an elementary environment for at least another year. If one ventures to the PUSD website, one will find posted all the API scores for our school district. Diamond Bar is split between Pomona Unified and Walnut. One of the elementary schools in our district is Golden Springs Elementary. Which I am jazzed to say has an API rating of 912. Palomares at last check was somewhere in the 300's. (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). For me it was a no brainer and was I fortunate to be able to get the children placed in that school taking advantage of the No Child Left Behind rule. It exists for a reason, one just has to take advantage of it.

What we are seeing now over in Diamond Bar/Pomona is that there are so many kids wanting to take advantage of the amazing school programs, that we are now in lotteries. I imagine that shortly we will see tuition for public schools - it's not far away. That is why I am so happy to see Golden Springs going K-8. It's the way life should be. I will also say that I think Abraham Lincoln is an amazing school with a fine principal. It's scores are high enough not to be considered NCLB.

And now my fave subject - THE FOX! You are looking so marvelous dahlink! Love, love, love the colors on the marquee! Had a nice chat with John recently at the wine bar and the progress and plans are amazing. So excited to see her in full bloom again. Maybe someone could dress up as Greta Garbo and drop on by at the opening. Super exciting! Well done all!

Until next time,

ciao

Be Still My Heart!

Great day in the neighborhood! Love, love, love the crispness of the morning air. And yes, that little gas station on the corner of Alvarado and Garey has gas for $1.97......who would have thought. Just as I know the Mayfair will stay the same for years, I know that gas prices will begin to crawl upwards again, but dang...let's enjoy. Just a small little perk for our side.

Speaking of which -we have that wonderful jewel of a Fox that is crawling out of the ashes - I would love to see the Mayfair also rise and shine. My hopes go UP and then come DOWN, DOWN, DOWN. I will not lose faith that someday my Avenger will come, and save the other corner. TADA - (hands on hips) "Here to save the dayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!". I think we need a "Captain Pomona". I'll knit the cap.

My very favorite time of the year is here! THANKSGIVING! Who gives a crap if the first thanksgiving is a myth. It's Thanksgiving! A time for us to gather and gives thanks for all of it. For me it has always meant a special time of reaching out to those less blessed. Our table is full and always welcome for anyone to join.

Happy Thanksgiving Pomona!

Until next time - ciao!

Such a LOVERLY day in the neighborhood!

I was just dusting off a few things in the parlour - totally a rare sight, and came upon a Pomona Telephone Directory from November 1932. I had purchased it years ago and from time to time it filters out from under the dust bunnies. This really goes hand in hand with someone asking me where I got the large letter California postcard that has Pomona on it.

The postmark shows that it was mailed on May 1, 1944 from Pomona. Apparently large letter postcards were very collectible and people mailed them out to each other. This one was going from Mrs. R. Clifford, 1555 S. White Ave., Pomona to an address in Massachusetts. At first I thought it might have been someone in John Clifford's family, but Dawn asked John for me several years back, and he said nope. I think it's a rather charming piece of Pomona memorabilia, and I have from time to time made duplicates out of it and mailed them out. So I looked the name up in the old phone book, and sure enough, the Clifford family lived on White in 1932 phone number Pomona 6177.

There are some great ads in the book and I will get them scanned and share them with ya'll. The book includes the areas of Chino, Claremont, LaVerne and San Dimas. Dr. Knight, a dentist, located at 2nd and Garey offered tooth extractions for $1.00. Oh my. Interesting to find your address and see who was actually living in your house back then. Way cool.

Until next time....ciao!

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like whipping out a Monopoly Game board and start playing when they pass the Boardwalk Apartments on Park?? I swear I can hear strains of Harry James and Benny Goodman drifting through the air. Gotta be the damn cutest apartment setting I've ever seen.

Got a speeding ticket (my first ever) this past January as I was boot scootin down Holt taking the Willow Bean to school. The speed limit is 35 and yes, I was over the speed limit. Of course I got the old "where ya going in such a hurry" line. I was tempted to say "a fire", but he didn't look like the engaging type. He had zipped up behind me when I had stopped for a light, and I silently said a prayer to the Guardian Angel of Grandmothers, but to no avail. Yes, I got a ticket. He had fun reading by license plate holder.

Now I'm quite aware that there are, at times, several motorcycle policemen patrolling Holt against the speeders....my thought is, has anyone told them about Garey Ave.?? Why are they always on Holt and not on Garey? One can get serious whiplash from watching the speeders in the morning (or actually any time of the day) on their way to the courthouses - I think to pay their speeding tickets from Holt.

And while I'm on the subject of Garey Ave, the doorway to Antique Row and the Art's Colony - think anyone from the city gives thought to how crappy it looks driving along the way. Not inviting AT ALL. Sometimes I will sit on the porch and daydream about the city actually putting in an island down the avenue with trees and grass. Giving at least part of the street a warm, inviting and expectant appeal for things yet to be revealed upon arriving in Pomona. Now I will allow that it looks a little better than when we had the massage parlour next door to Abraham Lincoln school, but we still have a long way to go. And as for me, I'd rather have the streetlight in front of my house waving a flag with the name of soldier serving his country, than a banner inviting us to visit a pig at the fair. But then again, that's just me.

Until next time, ciao!

I caught the photos of the Fox project on Ren's blog. I've been watching the project with baited breath. Can't wait to see the finished results. Thank you Ren.

So should I stop holding my breath on the Pomona Chop House? I really wanted that one to happen too. The web site is awesome for the Fox construction progress, but could someone update it? Or am I not looking in the right spot? Looks to me like the last update was in May 2008.

As for the events held in Pomona last Saturday, the comment was wouldn't it be nice if someone had put the whole thing together downtown. Ahhhhh, ya. I also think it would have been nice if someone in charge would have approached the businesses in and around downtown to help sponsor the chalk drawing event.

Last year at the first event, I think Donohue's had donated the chicken for the lunch (correct me if I'm wrong). There was also cake and soft drinks. And there was so much food that the parents were invited to participate in the lunch. Sadly this year there was 1/2 a banana, a bottle of water and a very small muffin for each one of the students. Vicky and crew did an awesome job, now we have to as a community get behind them with a little do, re, mi. Got it?? I will gladly donate. Gladly. Anyone out there with a big jar??

And while I'm on the subject, fliers were not sent out to the schools (not enough money for fliers). Emails were sent instead. Apparently Gold Springs Elementary did not get theirs, or else someone didn't hit the right button. We found out word of mouth. The Willow Bean was the loner from the school. I've done the shame on you to Mr. P the principal. He promises not to let this fall by the way next year. (Like I would let him!) Love you Mr. P!! Love, love, love Golden Springs Elementary...which will be expanding to include 7 and 8Th grades within the next 2 years. Sort of like wrapping your child in a blanket of warmth and knowledge everyday. API 921. You go Cougars!!

So who do you think should have been able to think "out of the box" and pull the events together downtown?? I'll take a moment to look around here. Hmmmmmm. The Farmer's Market is a BIG joke. I'm embarrassed to say that's our Pomona's best effort at it. Saturday's Market in the Baptist Church parking lot is great. But then they won't let crafters participate in the event. And why is that do you suppose?? Monrovia and other marketplaces that I have participated in through the years have been most successful when combining both the farmers and also the crafters. Talked to someone at the city several times years ago and offered ideas ....... (this is where we do a "pregnant pause"). THERE IS NO ONE TO PULL IT ALL TOGETHER! WAAAAAAAAA!!

Many years ago I took a proposal to the city and they immediately said "No-no". Like I was touching a forbidden fruit or something. I was referred to a young lady who was supposed to direct you or guide you or something, something (blocked the whole damn thing out of my memory). The meeting was so ridiculous that I wanted to puke. She had the nerve to say "Why do you want to do this in Pomona?" I think I sat there with the deer in the headlights look. She didn't live here and arrived everyday via the 71 freeway. Never had been down Garey Ave. And SOMEONE had hired her for that job!! So I thanked her and took my proposal and bowed out the door. Talk about feeling like someone had forgotten to bring life jackets on the boat trip. And to tell you the truth, I don't think that much more has really changed to date. Sort of like when I went to the city (another office) and said I was opening a yarn shop in my home on Garey. The person looked at me and said...why there?? Look at the eye sore businesses across the street from you. She was trying to talk me into taking a spot downtown. I guess no one had told her I already made my "bones" on Thomas along with Ma Belle Pru. I survived Amos and the Raves for goodness sakes! So once again, I bowed my way out of an office looking for a life jacket. THERE IS NO ONE TO PULL IT ALL TOGETHER! WAAAAAAAAA!!

My musings for today and don't even think about t-ping my house. Either another body part just gave out, or I have the flu today. I have to get this out of my system as cancelling the Friday Night Knitting Club is not an option. They would skewer me on their knitting needles.

Until next time....ciao

Vern Mascorro

I have just come back home from the Celebration of Life for Vern that was held today at the Morongo Reservation. It was a most beautiful ceremony and a gathering that was overflow. Vern certainly did touch so many of us in his short lifetime. I am still very sad, but this celebration of his life did bring together many old friends that have not seen one another in years. Only Vern's spirit could have done this. His infectious smile and his wonderful laughter will never fade away. Today was exactly the way he would have wanted it. Friends and laughter. Thank you Vern.

Until next time

Oh Pomona

Really happy to see all the latest activity out there on my lovable Pomona. For so long I felt like the lone kid on the block. Blog?? What's a blog? So the passage of time has served itself well and I am so excited to see that the word "blog" isn't foreign anymore. Several have done an awesome job of keeping the highlights of Pomona out there through their blogs. Please keep up the grand work. I wait with baited breath for each of your latest reflections on daily life here.

What a great turn out for the chalk drawing downtown. The gkids had such a great time last year and we all were so very happy to see that it was held again this year. Thank you Vicky Tessier and all the hard work you and your helpers put forth to hold this event. The artwork was awesome!

But what the hell was going on Friday night on Garey?? Yes, we had our checkpoint going on. Am I the only one that drives in Pomona with a driver's license, registration, and car insurance?? So why were there people out there with signs warning drivers to turn away? And guys with video cams? What am I missing?

The Friday Night Knitting Club was going full swing and all of the customers were stopped coming and going. Did ja hear me out there complaining?? Think not. And yes, that was the "other half" out there doing the moon walk. What can I say. Silly at 60. If anyone has the right to complain it should be the businesses that are still open along the way. But for me, it serves the greater good. Thank you to the Pomona Police Dept.

Ok...I wasn't going to say anything about our latest elections...but what the hell. How can this nation take such a HUGE step forward and Pomona take 10 GIGANTIC steps backwards??? Elliot Rothman?? Dannielle Soto??? A photo opt princess for Assembly?? Mind you, these are my personal opinions...but at my age, I've earned it. I am having the hardest time understanding all of this and wondering when the other shoe is going to hit the floor. Oh, Pomona - what have you done? Look, if you have an opposite opinion - start your own blog. I'm sitting here. Only time will tell how this fantasy is going to end up. At least we still have Paula!

I am going to take the time right now to mention the sudden passing of a dear, dear friend. I will miss him very much. Vern Mascorro was known by many in our city. It is with a deep sadness that I have to accept the fact that I will no long see his dashing smile or enjoy an unexpected afternoon lunch with him. My deepest regrets go out to his beautiful mother and his family. Vern loved Pomona and Pomona will miss Vern greatly. You will forever be in my heart Vern.

Until next time
